Rehabilitation of an ageing water supply network in Kulcs, Hungary

Challenge

The existing drinking water supply system at the Kulcs site was based on an ageing DN/OD 600 steel pipeline, which had become increasingly susceptible to corrosion, leakage and operational failures over time.

The resulting challenges included:
  • high maintenance costs and frequent repair interventions

  • increasing risks of supply interruptions

  • limited operational reliability and an insecure long-term network structure

Additionally, the pipe dimension (d 630) presented a particular challenge, as the executing contractor had only limited experience and installation expertise in handling large-diameter PE systems.

The objective of the project was therefore a complete renewal of the existing infrastructure, transitioning to a durable, corrosion-free and operationally reliable solution.

Solution

In close collaboration with the executing contractor, a modern PE system solution based on the proven FRIALEN safety technology was implemented.

The following components were used:

  • FRIALEN UB 630 electrofusion couplers from Aliaxis

This solution offered several key advantages:
  • long-term corrosion resistance thanks to PE100 system components

  • homogeneous and secure joints through electrofusion technology

  • high operational reliability, even in large dimensions

  • flexibility in system integration through flange adaptor solutions

In addition, FRIATEC supported the project with technical consulting and application expertise, particularly with regard to installation in this dimension range.

Implementation

The project was executed as part of a complete network reconstruction at the site.

Key aspects of the implementation included:

  • replacement of the existing steel pipeline with a new PE main pipeline

  • integration of FRIALEN electrofusion joints as the core connection technology

  • use of large-diameter UB 630 couplers to ensure safe and robust connections

  • on-site training and technical support for the installation team

As this was the contractor’s
first project in this nominal size range, close collaboration with FRIATEC was crucial.

Through the
combination of:

  • technical expertise

  • proven system components

  • hands-on support

seamless installation was ensured, while significantly strengthening confidence in electrofusion technology for large-diameter applications.

Conclusion

With the successful completion of the project in Kulcs, a critical part of the infrastructure has been sustainably modernised.

The new PE pipeline solution provides the operator with:

  • significantly improved supply reliability

  • reduced maintenance and operational costs

  • a durable and future-proof network structure

At the same time, the project highlights FRIATEC’s core strengths:

Proven system solutions for demanding applications
Technical expertise  even in large dimensions
Strong partnership throughout the entire project lifecycle

The Kulcs project clearly demonstrates how modern plastic piping systems and reliable jointing technology can efficiently and sustainably transform existing infrastructure – ensuring safe water supply today and in the future.
